Valencia’s iPronics raises $125m for the photonic chips that link AI data centres — after the sheds, the wires and the fibre, Spain reaches the silicon

This week it wrote one. iPronics, the Valencia-based maker of programmable photonic chips, has raised $125 million — with Nvidia among the investors — to build the optical networking silicon that moves data between the processors inside AI data centres, per Reuters. The wire ran it as a funding round. What iPronics makes, plainly

Nvidia’s venture arm places bets across the infrastructure its processors depend on — power, cooling, memory, networking — and its capital is strategic before it is financial: the company funds the components that make its own chips more useful. A Spanish photonics startup receiving that money has passed the most demanding technical diligence in the industry, from the one investor whose judgment on data-centre interconnect is definitive. The pattern the file has called the electron layer has become something larger — a full-stack Spanish presence in the decade’s defining industry, from concrete to photons — and the theme edition the file has staged for weeks (“Spain wires the AI age”) has, with this round, every exhibit it needs.
The honest ledger
The counterweights, at full weight. $125 million is a Series-scale round, not a factory — commercialisation of photonic interconnect runs on years-long timelines, and startups at this stage fail more often than they scale. Nvidia backs many — its portfolio is broad, and a place in it is validation, not guarantee. The stack is an assembly, not a strategy — the five layers are five separate companies pursuing five separate businesses; the pattern is real, but no one in Madrid planned it, and the Report claims the map, not a masterplan. And the fifth check hums — a funding announcement is the round’s own advertisement, and Reuters’ interest is the kingmaker’s name, not the technology’s proof.

Still, mark the entry at its true size: the world’s most valuable company chose a Spanish startup for the layer of the AI machine it cares about most, and the map of Spanish presence in the build-out has no missing rung. The watch-list takes the chips’ first deployments, Nvidia’s role beyond capital, and the gigafactory’s September filing beside it. The AI age will be remembered for its models; it is being built by contractors, utilities and chipmakers whose names the models’ users will never learn — and an unlikely number of those names are Spanish.
