In the UK, a certified translation is a translation accompanied by a formal signed statement from the translator. To be accepted by UK authorities, it must include four things: a declaration that the translation is a true and accurate version of the original document, the date of the translation, the translator’s full name and signature, and the translator’s contact details. Every translation I deliver includes all four, on headed paper, with the translation mirroring the layout of your original — stamps, seals, and annotations included.

A note on “sworn translation” (traducción jurada / tradução juramentada): the UK does not operate a sworn-translator system like Spain, Portugal, or Brazil. For documents being submitted to UK authorities, a certified translation as described above is the correct and accepted format. If you need a translation for use in Spain, Portugal, or Latin America, different rules apply in each country — ask me and I’ll point you in the right direction honestly, even where I’m not the right provider.

• 1. Will my translation definitely be accepted? Every translation I certify includes the statement of accuracy, date, signature, and contact details that UK authorities require of certified translations. These are the published requirements, and I prepare every document to that standard.

     Do you need my original documents? No — a clear scan or phone photo is all I need. You keep your originals safe.

     My document is from Latin America, not Spain or Portugal — is that a problem? Not at all. I translate documents from every Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking country and am familiar with the civil registry and notarial formats of each.

     How fast can you deliver? Most single documents sent before midday are delivered the next working day, and same-day is often possible — tell me your deadline when you send the document and I’ll confirm before you pay anything.

     Do I need an apostille too? An apostille legalises your original document and is issued by the authorities of the country that issued it — it’s separate from translation. If your document carries one, I translate the apostille as part of the service. If you’re not sure whether you need one, check with the authority you’re applying to.

     Can you certify a translation done by someone else (or by an app)? No — I only certify my own translations, because the certification is my professional declaration that the translation is accurate. That’s what makes it worth something.
