It&#8217;s Spain."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The world&#8217;s largest asset manager has named its preferred market for the second half of 2026 \u2014 and quietly, it already owned more of it than anyone else.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BlackRock manages more money than any institution on Earth \u2014 over $11 trillion, a sum larger than the economy of every country except the United States and China. When it states a preference, capital listens. And BlackRock&#8217;s preference for the second half of 2026 is Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the United States. Not Japan. Not Germany or France. Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BlackRock&#8217;s call on Spain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signal has been building for months. In its European outlook, the BlackRock Investment Institute \u2014 the firm&#8217;s in-house research arm \u2014 pointed to bright spots in European financials, infrastructure and healthcare, and stated plainly: &#8220;We keep our country preference for Spain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month, that preference hardened into something stronger. According to Forbes, the firm has now positioned Spain as its principal global preference for stock-market exposure for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economic backdrop makes the logic legible. Spain has spent the past two years as the growth engine of the eurozone, expanding at rates its larger neighbours can only envy, powered by services, tourism, migration-driven labour supply and a wave of European investment funds. Its banks \u2014 the heaviest sector in the Spanish index \u2014 have thrived in the higher-rate era. Its utilities and infrastructure groups sit exactly where BlackRock says the world&#8217;s bottlenecks, and therefore its returns, will be: power, grids, energy transition. <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.ai\/chat\/INTERNAL-LINK-TO-INECO-ARTICLE\">Spain&#8217;s infrastructure groups are winning abroad, too \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What BlackRock already owns in Spain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the part that makes the story more interesting than a routine analyst call: BlackRock is not discovering Spain. It already owns more of it than anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Filings with the CNMV, Spain&#8217;s market regulator, show BlackRock holding declared stakes across virtually the entire IBEX 35: 6.9% of Banco Santander, 7.2% of BBVA, 8.4% of Banco Sabadell, 5.9% of Bankinter and 4.7% of CaixaBank in banking alone. Beyond the banks: 6.3% of Iberdrola, 7.2% of Repsol, 7.4% of Enag\u00e1s, 5.9% of Telef\u00f3nica, 5.5% of Amadeus, 5.1% of ACS, 5.1% of Aena, 5.0% of Cellnex and 3.5% of IAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spanish financial press has taken to calling BlackRock the effective &#8220;owner&#8221; of the IBEX \u2014 its largest shareholder, present in nearly every sector of the index. Forbes puts the portfolio&#8217;s value at a record \u20ac104 billion, with Banco Santander \u2014 whose share price surge has lately carried it past Inditex in market value \u2014 the firm&#8217;s single largest Spanish holding at more than \u20ac12 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You already live in the Spanish economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For British and American readers, the names on that list are more familiar than they might first appear \u2014 many simply aren&#8217;t recognised as Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santander sits on every UK high street, holding millions of British mortgages and current accounts. Iberdrola owns ScottishPower, meaning millions of British households pay their electricity bill to a Bilbao-headquartered utility. IAG is the parent of British Airways as well as Iberia. Amadeus, from Madrid, processes a huge share of the world&#8217;s airline bookings \u2014 if you&#8217;ve flown, its software has almost certainly handled your itinerary. Ferrovial, another Spanish giant, built and long co-owned Heathrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the world&#8217;s largest asset manager says &#8220;Spain,&#8221; this is what it means: not paella and beaches, but banks, grids, airports and the plumbing of global travel \u2014 much of it woven invisibly into Anglo daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The necessary nuance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two distinct things are true here, and precision matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shareholdings are largely structural: BlackRock holds much of the IBEX through its index funds, as it holds most major markets, and it takes no seats on Spanish boards \u2014 the Spanish press describes it as a &#8220;chemically pure&#8221; financial investor. Those stakes rose to records as Spanish share prices did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preference is different: an active, tactical judgement by the firm&#8217;s investment strategists that Spanish equities will outperform in the second half of 2026. The first is a mirror of the market; the second is a bet on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that is precisely what makes the combination notable. The institution with the deepest structural exposure to Spain \u2014 the one with the most complete view of its market from the inside \u2014 looked at the second half of 2026 and chose Spain over every alternative it owns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain has spent decades marketed to the Anglo world as a place to holiday and retire. BlackRock&#8217;s positioning is a reminder of what the Spanish economy actually is: the eurozone&#8217;s growth leader, home to world-scale banks, utilities and infrastructure groups \u2014 and, for the world&#8217;s largest investor, the market to own right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BlackRock didn&#8217;t discover Spain this summer. It was already the IBEX&#8217;s biggest owner.
