Together with the contract it signed directly with LaLiga in June, that lets Movistar+ keep offering 100% of the league’s matches, alongside the Champions League it holds to 2031. The headline is a payment; the story is why the payment goes to DAZN rather than to the league — and the answer is the structure of Spanish football’s money.

Why a rival, not the league

LaLiga does not sell its rights as one block. It auctions them in packages, and the competition regulator’s rules prevent any single buyer from holding the whole championship exclusively — the legacy of a decade of interventions designed to keep Spanish football from becoming one company’s property. In the latest cycle, DAZN won one package directly from LaLiga — those five matches a round — and Telefónica won the other. Which leaves Movistar+ with a problem the rules created on purpose: its entire proposition to subscribers is every match, one place, and a third of the matches now belong to somebody else. The solution is the deal announced this week: Telefónica sublicenses DAZN’s package — a wholesale arrangement under which it carries DAZN’s matches to its own customers, while DAZN keeps selling the same games through its own app. Telefónica does not buy the rights. It rents the missing third.

The verbs, precisely

The tense discipline earns its keep on this story, because the wires will get the verbs wrong. Telefónica owns its own package (subject to the June contract’s terms), licenses DAZN’s, and offers the complete league. «Secures 100% of La Liga» is true; «buys La Liga» is false; «keeps» is the honest verb — this is retention, not conquest, the country’s biggest telco defending a bundle it has sold for years by paying whatever the rules oblige it to pay. And the sum is exactly that: not a bid for football, but the price of completeness in a market designed to make completeness expensive.

Who wins

Follow the money and the winner is clear. LaLiga — which just reported record revenue of €5.46 billion — collected from both buyers at auction and now watches one buyer pay the other again for the same matches: the league’s rights have been monetised twice on their way to the same screens. DAZN — the London-based streamer, American-owned — earns €330 million a year in wholesale income on a package it also retails, the intermediary’s ideal position. Telefónica wins the bundle and pays for it: five more seasons of a proposition its fixed-line and mobile businesses depend on, at a cost the market will judge against churn avoided. And the subscriber, whom the package rules were written to protect, gets every match in one place — for a price that now has two layers of margin built into it.

The affection economy’s sports column

This masthead tracks the attention trade — what the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world’s stories, games and screens earn and who collects — and the sports column has waited for a specimen this clean. Spanish football is the country’s most valuable content; the rules split its ownership; and the split routes a third of a billion euros a season through a platform headquartered in London and owned in New York on its way from Spanish subscribers to Spanish clubs. That is not a grievance — DAZN won its package fairly in LaLiga’s own auction, and the league is the beneficiary — but it is a structural fact about who intermediates the affection economy, and the file records it beside the streaming pledges and the streaming taxes: the anglosphere’s platforms sit between Spain and its own game, by regulatory design.

The honest ledger

The counterweights, at full weight. Non-exclusive means non-exclusive — DAZN’s subscribers get the same matches; Telefónica bought completeness, not a moat. The deal starts in 2027-28 — two seasons away, under a contract whose full terms the filing does not disclose. The June contract’s details are the open question — what Telefónica holds outright versus carries under licence should be confirmed before any account of what it «owns.» €330 million a year is a price, not a valuation — the market will read it against Movistar+’s subscriber economics, which Telefónica does not publish at that granularity. And the fifth check hums at both ends: a regulatory filing states the sum; the framing — «100% of the league» — is Telefónica’s.

The scoreboard

Still, mark the entry: Spanish football’s price has been printed for five seasons — €1.65 billion for the third that the rules put in a rival’s hands — and the structure of the country’s most valuable content is visible in a single filing: a league selling twice, a London platform in the middle, a telco paying for the bundle its business rests on. The watch-list takes the June contract’s terms, DAZN’s own Spanish subscriber numbers, and the 2027 handover. Every match, one place — at €330 million a year. Watch the churn.

The Hispano-Luso Report tracks the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking business news that English-speaking coverage overlooks — analysed beyond the English-language headlines.
