A league table is not an event, and this Report files statistics with tongs — but this particular table is something more than tape: it is the scoreboard for a season this masthead has covered arrival by arrival, promise by promise, statute by statute. The investment wars have run all year in speeches and gazettes. The podium is where the money actually stood.

The table, precisely

The framing first. FDI league positions describe completed arrivals — capital that cleared every gate and landed: plants built, companies bought, stakes taken — which makes the table the lagging-but-honest referee of every investment promise the region’s governments have issued. Brazil’s lead, per the reporting, is not narrow: the gap to Mexico is widening, in the very year Mexico’s nearshoring pitch — geography as destiny, the factory next door to the American consumer — was supposed to compound. And Chile’s third is the quiet entry: the smallest economy on the podium, out-attracting nations twice its size.

The paradox resolved

Regular readers will feel the significance immediately, because Brazil’s crown arrives against the year’s loudest headwinds — and this Report covered every one. The capital-markets tape ran nervous (the Bovespa’s foreign outflows were a running file). The trade war with Washington ran hot — tariffs on Brazilian goods at punitive levels, a friction file thick with escalations. The politics ran loud, as Brazilian politics do. And yet: the arrivals kept coming, and this masthead logged them as they landed — the record pre-salt harvests, the anglosphere’s affection billions (Amazon’s $2bn for the region’s stories, disproportionately Brazilian), the ChatGPT podium that made Brazil OpenAI’s third market on earth, the tourists’ record year, and now Itaú chartering into America as the traffic runs both ways. The portfolio money wobbled; the direct money — the patient, factory-building, company-buying kind — voted Brazil anyway. Mood and money disagreed all year, and money won.

The two referees

Which sharpens the tool this Report will now use weekly. The season has two referees: the mood referee — the fund-manager surveys, most recently BofA’s, where sentiment is polled monthly and Colombia was just marked sliding — and the money referee — the arrivals table, where completed capital speaks. Read together, they map the war honestly: on Colombia the referees agree (sliding in mood, absent from the podium); on Brazil they disagreed magnificently all year — surveyed anxiety against landed billions — and the money referee has now overruled the mood one. The lesson files permanently: surveys measure conversations; tables measure consummations — and this masthead’s tense discipline has always known which verb to trust.

What each step says

Read the podium as the investment wars’ mid-year judgment. Brazil, first: the biggest economy won without a signature certainty-statute — no RIGI, no constitutional tax freeze — proving scale, market depth and sectoral momentum (energy, agribusiness, the affection economy) can out-attract legislative theatre. Mexico, second and distanced: the abstainer’s result — the country that competes on geography alone, statute-less by choice, holds silver but is losing ground in the year nearshoring was meant to peak, a gap the file will watch for meaning (tariff uncertainty reaching Mexico’s pitch? the USMCA review’s shadow?). Chile, third: the settled model’s dividend — the certainty statute passed, the lithium records shipping, the smallest podium economy converting predictability itself into arrivals per capita no rival matches. And the absence the scorecard cannot ignore: Argentina, the war’s loudest reformer — the RIGI, the $50bn filing, the presidential roadshows — is not on the podium. The boldest promises, the thinnest arrivals: the gap between Argentina’s paper and its podium is the single most instructive fact in the table, and this Report’s Sunday scorecard will give it the column it deserves.

The honest ledger

The counterweights, in their standing place. FDI statistics are lumpy and lagging — single mega-deals swing annual tables, and the arrivals landing in 2026 were decided in boardrooms one to three years ago: the podium rewards past persuasion, not current policy (Argentina’s defenders will fairly note the RIGI’s arrivals are still in transit — the ledger grants it). «2026» is a partial year — the table can reorder by December, and these series get revised habitually. League position is not trajectory — Mexico’s silver with a widening gap and Chile’s bronze with momentum tell different stories than their medals suggest. And the source’s framing is the region’s business press doing what league tables invite — this Report adds the analysis, but the numbers remain the reporters’ compilation of official series, cited as such.

The scoreboard

Still, mark the mid-year verdict at its true weight: after a season of statutes, summits, surveys and speeches, the money’s actual map crowns Brazil despite the noise, Mexico despite the statutes it never wrote, and Chile because of the one it did — while the war’s loudest theatre watches from below the podium. The watch-list takes its gates: the full-year table (December’s final standings), the RIGI’s arrival curve (Argentina’s paper converting, or not), and Sunday’s scorecard, where every theatre gets its promise-versus-verdict column with this podium as the spine. The investment wars’ first half is scored. The money has spoken — quietly, as money does. Watch the arrivals.

The Hispano-Luso Report tracks the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking business news that English-speaking coverage overlooks — analysed beyond the English-language headlines.
