That sentence would once have been unremarkable — flag carriers order jets, and governments pay. What makes this one worth an edition is the payer: nobody but the airline itself.

Aerolíneas Argentinas has launched its largest fleet renewal in more than a decade — twenty next-generation aircraft arriving between 2027 and 2031, renewing a quarter of its 84-strong fleet and 60% of its long-haul capacity — and the entire programme is financed from the company’s own resources. Not a peso of state money. For an airline that had absorbed public subsidies more or less continuously since its renationalisation in 2008, that single financing line is the story.

The order

The shopping list, formalised in lease agreements signed at Farnborough covering fourteen of the twenty aircraft: six Airbus A330-900neos for the long-haul network, supplied by Irish lessor Avolon in a new three-class configuration — 30 business, 24 premium economy, 237 economy — arriving from the first half of 2028 to replace the ageing A330-200s. Eight Boeing 737 MAX 10s, most through US-based Aviation Capital Group, and six 737 MAX 8s for the domestic and regional network, with the first MAX 8 due in the opening quarter of 2027 and two already under contract.

Chief executive Fabián Lombardo called the Farnborough signings «a clear message of confidence from the industry in our company» — and from lessors, confidence is not a pleasantry. Avolon and ACG commit aircraft to carriers they believe will pay the rent for a decade. Their signatures are underwriting of the turnaround as much as any auditor’s.

The word doing the heavy lifting

«Self-funded» carries the weight here, and it rests on numbers. Last year was Aerolíneas’ first without transfers from the Argentine treasury since the state took the airline back eighteen years ago. The company reports an operating profit of $120.7 million for 2025 — audited by KPMG — more than doubling the $56.6 million of the year before. The airline that spent nearly two decades as a byword for the fiscal cost of state ownership now covers its own costs, and its own growth.

The turnaround did not happen in a vacuum. Javier Milei’s government arrived promising to privatise the carrier or hand it to its employees, and made Aerolíneas a symbol of the state it intended to shrink. What followed inside the company — route rationalisation, cost discipline, a smaller workforce, and a management mandate to reach profitability or face the consequences — has produced something politically curious: a state airline that saved itself from privatisation by behaving as though it were private. Whether one reads that as vindication of the pressure or of the management, the balance sheet reads the same.

The macro backdrop rhymes. Argentina posted record exports in the first half of this year, its debt was upgraded by Moody’s this week, and the reopening of the economy’s arteries — energy, mining, agriculture — is precisely what fills long-haul cabins and cargo holds. An airline betting its own cash on 2031 capacity is, among other things, a bet that the normalisation holds.

What the fleet numbers don’t say

The English-language aviation press has covered the order thoroughly — the trade titles had the lessor details within hours of the Farnborough announcement. What the coverage largely omits is the political economy underneath: that this is the same airline Buenos Aires spent years subsidising and Milei’s government marked for disposal, now presenting KPMG-audited profits and a self-financed order book at the industry’s most visible gathering, on British soil, between Boeing and Airbus hardware.

For readers tracking Argentina’s normalisation, the airline is a better indicator than most macro statistics: profitability audited, subsidies ended, and now capital committed years ahead. Flag carriers are where Latin American states have traditionally hidden their fiscal sins. This one has started publishing its virtues instead.

The caveats belong in the file, not the footnotes. The aircraft come on lease, so the obligations are real and the rent is due in dollars regardless of what the peso does. The first delivery is eighteen months away, an aviation eternity. And Argentine turnarounds have a documented habit of meeting Argentine reversals. But those are risks the lessors have priced with their own money — which is, again, rather the point.

The scoreboard

Twenty aircraft, three lessors, zero pesos from the treasury. The airline that was the argument for privatisation has become the argument that it may not be necessary — or, depending on your politics, proof of what the mere threat of it achieves. Either way, somewhere between Farnborough’s chalets, an Argentine flag carrier just did the most un-Argentine-flag-carrier thing imaginable: it paid its own way.

The Hispano-Luso Report tracks the Iberian and Latin American business stories that anglophone coverage overlooks — analysed beyond the newswires.
